English 2 Final Project - Stage 1

This project involves creating an improvement plan based on a study of an existing tourist product or service that you can investigate firsthand, such as a hotel, a theme park, or a holiday package. You are required to analyse the product or service, identify its genuine shortcomings, and use these as a foundation to design your improvement plan. Students undertaking continuous assessment must complete this in pairs, whereas single-assessment students must work individually.

The presentation should last 12 minutes if delivered by two students, and 10 minutes for individual presentations. This will be followed by a question session with the panel of examiners, bringing the total time to 15 minutes. Visual aids are mandatory and may include PowerPoint, Prezi, and other similar tools.

Considering the nature of this project, you should select a product or service that is not particularly successful, as this will make designing an improvement plan both easier and more realistic. You may refer to https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/ or similar websites to choose a product or service that, based on user opinions, demonstrates a need for enhancement. Take into account that you'll need to gather 80-100 customer reviews. Alternatively, you can select a product or service based on your personal experience, such as a hotel where you have worked or stayed. However, you are not permitted to opt for Port Aventura, Hotel W, Ryanair, Horta Maze, Carmel Bunkers, Parc Güell, or Tibidabo amusement park. Improvement plans for transport infrastructures are also inadvisable due to their complexity. Each project should focus on a different product or service.

Post your product or service description on this blog, citing all the sources of information you employed.

Brief Description

The sunset in Oia, Santorini, is one of the most popular tourist experiences in Greece. Every evening, large numbers of visitors gather around the caldera cliffs and the Castle of Oia to watch the sun set over the Aegean Sea. The view of the white buildings against the sea and sky makes it one of the most photographed places on the island.

The experience itself is free, as it takes place in public areas such as streets, terraces, and viewpoints. Because of its popularity on social media and travel blogs, many tourists consider it a “must-see” when visiting Santorini. However, this popularity has created several problems.

After reading reviews on TripAdvisor and Google, many visitors mention overcrowding as the main issue. People complain about difficulty finding space, blocked views, pushing, noise, and lack of organization. Some reviews also mention safety concerns due to narrow streets and large crowds. These repeated complaints suggest that the sunset viewing experience could benefit from better visitor management and planning.

For this project, we have selected Travelodge Barcelona Poblenou, a budget hotel located in the Poblenou area of Barcelona.

The hotel has an average rating below 4/5 on review platforms. Although guests appreciate its location and price, many reviews mention problems such as cleanliness issues, basic facilities, noise, and low perceived value for money.

For this reason, it is an appropriate case study to develop a realistic improvement plan.

MediaMarkt is one of the largest electronics retailers in Spain, offering a wide range of products such as TVs, computers, mobile phones, and home appliances. Customers can shop both in physical stores and through the company’s online platform, which makes it a popular option for electronics purchases.

However, despite its popularity, MediaMarkt has received a high number of customer complaints. After reading reviews on platforms such as Google Reviews, Trustpilot, and consumer organizations, several recurring problems appear.

Many customers report delivery delays, damaged products, or orders that do not arrive on time. Others complain about poor customer service, especially difficulties contacting support or receiving clear answers. Returns and refunds are also frequently mentioned as slow or complicated. In addition, some customers criticize misleading discounts during sales periods.

These repeated complaints suggest that while MediaMarkt is widely used, improvements in customer service, logistics, and transparency could significantly improve the overall customer experience.

We are Mar and Mira and we have chosen Britannia Sachas Hotel Manchester. It is a three-star budget hotel located in the centre of Manchester, close to shops, public transport, and main tourist attractions. The hotel offers over 200 rooms, as well as a restaurant, bars, and conference facilities. It mainly targets budget travellers, groups, and visitors who want to stay in a central location at an affordable price.

We decided to select this hotel because it has a very high number of negative reviews on platforms such as Tripadvisor. Many customers complain about cleanliness, maintenance issues, outdated facilities, and poor service. Since there are a large number of reviews available, it will be easy for us to analyse customer feedback and identify recurring problems.

We believe this hotel is a good choice for our project because it clearly shows areas that need improvement. This will allow us to create a realistic and well-structured improvement plan based on actual customer opinions.

We have chosen Hotel & Spa Villa Olímpica Suites in Barcelona. It is a four-star hotel located in the Poblenou neighbourhood. The hotel offers rooms, a spa, a restaurant, and other services for tourists and business travellers.

We chose this hotel because it has over 1,000 reviews on TripAdvisor, including several negative ones, which makes it easier for us to analyse customer feedback. Many guests mention issues with spa services, maintenance, room cleanliness, noise levels, and poor service.

Based on these reviews, we believe that this hotel clearly has areas that need improvement. For us, it is a very good choice for the project.

For this project, we have selected Restaurant Oriente, a traditional restaurant located near Las Ramblas in the city center of Barcelona.

The restaurant has a very low average rating, well below 3, on major review platforms. While a small number of customers mention its central location as a positive aspect, the majority of reviews highlight serious issues such as poor food quality, overpriced menu items, unprofessional or slow service, poor higine and a very low perceived value for money. Many guests describe the restaurant as a tourist trap and express strong dissatisfaction with their overall experience.

For this reason, Restaurant Oriente is an appropriate case study to develop a realistic improvement plan, focusing on food quality, customer service, pricing transparency, and overall customer satisfaction.
