Final project. Stage 1

This project is an improvement plan based on a study of an existing tourist product which is close enough for you to investigate first hand: a hotel, a theme park, a holiday package, etc. Continuous assessment students must carry it out in pairs, while final assessment students must do it individually.

You must study the product, draw its real downsides and, using these downsides as a starting point, design an improvement plan.

The presentation must be 10-13 minutes long and will be followed by a few questions from the  panel of examiners, adding up to a total of 15 minutes. Visual support is compulsory and it can be PowerPoint, Prezi etc.

Given the nature of this final project, you should choose a product that isn't too successful, so this way designing an improvement plan will be easier and more realistic. You can check out http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/ or similar websites and pick a product which, in sight of the users' opinions, shows a need for improvement. Take into account that you'll need to look for 80-100 customer reviews. You can also choose a product based on your own experience (e.g. a hotel where you work or have stayed). However, you can't analyse Port Aventura, Hotel W, Ryanair, Horta maze, Carmel bunkers, park Güell or Tibidabo amusement park. Improvement plans for transport infrastructures aren't advisable either, since they're highly complex. Products shouldn't be repeated.

To start with, once you've prepared and uploaded a video describing your product briefly, you'll need to post your description on this blog. All the sources of information that you've used must be mentioned.

IMPROVEMENT OF A TOURISTIC ATTRACTION: HOSTEL-RESTAURANT ALT EMOPRDÀ

Núria and I have chosen the Alt Empordà Hostal-Restaurant because we would like to improve its conditions and make it a better Hostal-Restaurant.

Alt Empordà Hostal-Restaurant is located in Ventalló; at 8 km from l’Escala, 18 km from the Alt Empordà capital, Figueres and at 38 km from Girona. An unbeatable situation to discover the jewels that such landscape hides.

Its location allows you to get immersed into the traditional catalan culture and to enjoy the area while visiting museums, villages and restaurants located near by.

This establishment consists of 9 double rooms and 1 apartment. 5 of this 9 double bedrooms have a terrace and are targeted east from where the sun rises. The other 4 bedrooms overlook the garden area.

The services and facilities provided are a parking lot, WIFI, a swimming pool, a bar, a restaurant, activities for children and breakfast (optional).

Although providing all these amenities, the conditions of these are not in its best state; the installations are quite old and need to be renovated.

The entrance of the hostel it’s quite left. Which doesn’t give a great image to the customer.

IMPROVEMENT OF A TOURISTIC PRODUCT PLAN: ZOO OF BARCELONA

The Zoo of Barcelona is a zoologic located in parc de la Ciutadella in Barcelona, Spain. It opened during La Mercè, the festivities of Barcelona in 1892. Since then it has suffered some transformations to update to the regulations, like the abolitions of whales and dolphins shows. Right now it has a total of 150 animal species and more than 50 different types of plants. The infrastructure is well connected with the rest of the city, accessible via metro L1, L4 and Rodalies. The zoo also offers temporal expositions and some activities like feeding animals. The number of visitors have decreased during the years because it has to adapt on the times being, suffering a transformation like other zoos, converting it to a ZOO21, where the main activity is the conservation of the species and not the exposition.

IMPROVEMENT OF A TOURISTIC PRODUCT PLAN: MERCAT DE BOQUERIA

The Mercat de Sant Josep de la Boqueria, also known as "La Boqueria" is a very famous public market located in La Rambla, Barcelona.It is a food market that offers high quality fresh products like fruits, fishes, meat, chocolates, etc. You can also find products from all over the world which have been its intention to differentiate itself from the rest of the city's commercial food spaces.Also, as it is in the center, many people visit it.The first idea of the market came up in 1217 when they started to sell meat in meat stalls.Until 1794, it was known as Mercat de la Palla, or straw market. The current name "Boqueria" comes from catalan word boc which means "goat".In this way, Boqueria is a place where goat meat is sold. The market was legally recognized in 1826 and was opened in March 19, 1840 constructed by architect Mas Vilá.However, the plans for the building was changed many times.La Boqueria was a market used by locals but now, It is always crowded with tourists which can be a negative impact to locals.

IMPROVEMENT OF A TOURISTIC PRODUCT PLAN: MERCAT DE BOQUERIA

Restaurant Oriente is located in the most famous street in Barcelona, La Ramblas. Today it is a 1200 meter boulevard that attracts large numbers of visitors. This restaurant close quite late, so it has the kitchen open until during mostly all day.

Therefore, it offers something that customers appreciate, an outdoor terrace. Not only that, the whole complex was built in order to be able to hold a large capacity in the indoor dining room.

This business is a restaurant, so of course it serves alcohol, so you can go there to have a drink without any problem. Card payments are accepted.

IMPROVEMENT OF A TOURISTIC PRODUCT PLAN: Restaurant La Bodegueta

La Bodegueta Barcelona is a traditional restaurant and tapas bar with mediterranean and spanish cuisines.
It has two restaurants both located in the center of Barcelona, the biggest local is in Provença street, which has a terrace and big interior space, and the oldest one, the one that we are going to study, is located in Rambla Catalunya, and it is an authentic indoor space born as a wine cellar in the forties. The restaurant offers a great selection of classic tapas, with an authentic and traditional informal atmosphere.

1.INTRODUCTION
In this project we will study and analyze an existing tourism product. Once all the necessary information has been collected, we will propose measures to improve the establishment. Furthermore, this activity is made up of four main parts: first we will discover how this attraction is, we will create statistical analyses of customer services, we will design a SWOT analysis and finally we will propose many suggestions for improve this product.
The product that we have chosen to study is a hostel called Hostal Athenas, located in Sant Adrià del Besòs. We think that is interesting to analyze it since we have found many different reviews and we can get different sources of information.

2.PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
2.1. The hostel
The Hostal Athenas is a 1-star family hostel that offers basic and low-cost accomodation. This establishment was completely renovated in 2011 and although it offers low-cost accomodation, it provides the necessary services such as room service, private bathroom, Wi-Fi in all rooms and air conditioning/heating.
If we focus on customer service, reception is open from 9AM to 12PM and from 7PM to 10PM.
Apart from this schedule, you will be able to get into the hotel by using the key-card during the entire stay. For the check-in , if the customers have already booked any room, key-cards will be given them by a terminal which is in the hall. If they have not booked anything yet, they can get the key-cards paying in the terminal with any credit card.
The decoration of this hostel tries to break the formality and give a touch of fun and color to the establishment. We can see that there are colorful balls in the entrance and also in the corridors that break with a serious atmosphere.
2.2. Location
The Hostal Athenas is located in the centre of Sant Adrià del Besòs, in the street of Andreu Soler, 2. This location borders Barcelona in the South, Badalona in the North and Santa Coloma de Gramenet in the West. The place is inside of the public transport organisation of the city of Barcelona, so you can get to the city’s downtown in just 20 minutes.
Moreover, in this area, we can find the Besos River Park, where you can do sport, go for a walk with your family and enjoy the outdoors. The park is a natural space and the Besos River flows along the route. In addition, customers can visit nearby places such as:
The Congress Centre (approx 1.2 km)
The Forum Park (approx 1.2 km)
Sant Adria’s beach (approx 1.5 km)
Olympic Pavilion of Badalona (approx 1.8 km)
Furthermore, Barcelona is famous because of its art and architecture. Therefore, we can say that the city is very touristic due to some locations and buildings such as La Sagrada Familia, el Barri Gòtic or Las Ramblas. The hostel, which is well connected with these attractions, takes advantage from this.

2.3. Rooms and services
The hostel has four floors. On the main floor there is a reception and two seats where guests can sit if they wish. In addition, on the first floor we can find some of the rooms, a vending machine and a space for the room maintenance. Following with the second and third floor we can find the rest of the rooms. The property has a lift and stairs, but there is no space to rest or eat something. The hostel has a total of 23 rooms and it offers four different room categories that are: double room, superior double room, triple room and family room. Moreover, this site offers other type of different services such as:
extra bed if a guest needs it, cradle, private bathroom and TV in all rooms,
room with kitchen (includes cooking utensils), kettle, Nespresso coffee machine, Room Service and a change machine

Sailor Restaurant

We decided to do the project about this restaurant because there was a trend in YouTube where youtubers from different cities, started going to the restaurants with worst reviews from their cities to compare the bad comments with their experiences. And all the youtubers from Barcelona went to this one. So, we thought that it will be interesting to discover what’s wrong with them and what aspects they need to improve.

The Sailor’s is a restaurant located near La Barceloneta, specifically, on Passeig de Colom 7, in Barcelona.

We can say that the customers don’t really like the relationship quality-price in this restaurant. The prices in the Sailor’s restaurant vary a lot depending on the dish you order but they are mostly quite expensive dishes since it is located in a very touristic area of Barcelona. Moreover, the service they offer is not really good.

We will verify all this that we have just explained with the study of the reviews that we will collect later.

REJMI AND JINGDAN: HOSTAL SAN RAMÓN.

The Hostal San Ramón is an economical guest house in Barcelona which is located in the city centre, Carrer de San Ramón.It is located in Ciutat Vella district which is very famous for tourists. It is very well connected with transport,shopping centres, restaurants, cinemas, etc.

They have 30 total rooms which are divided into:
10 Single bedrooms with washbasin and shared bathroom
5 Double bedrooms (2 beds) with private bathroom and balcony
5 Double bedrooms (2 beds) with shared bathroom and balcony
10 Double bedrooms (1 bed) with shower, washbasin, windows and shared bathroom

All the bedrooms are equipped with air conditioning and central heating.The reception has a 24-hour service. They also have a telephone, fax service, safe deposit in reception.They also have a parking service for 7 cars or 20 motorcycles.

However, we found this Hostal in Trip Advisor with bad reviews.As this project is about improvement of a tourist product, we thought it will be a right product to give some advise for the improvement they need.

We decided to change our product because we found one that was better to develope for this project.

In this case, looking for "worst hotels in Barcelona", we found My space Barcelona which is an Apartment center that owns 22 establishments in the district of Sarria-Sant Gervasi, in Barcelona, with 7 years of experience in the sector.
The historic city center is 3.5 km away from them and FGC Muntaner Train Station is 3 stops from Plaza Catalunya.

Apartment rentals offer wonderful duplex, triplex apartments with swimming pools, terraces, gardens and lovely lofts located in the heart of the charming district Gràcia. My Space Barcelona provides self-catering apartments in Barcelona to rent for days.

The apartments are decorated in a modern style, and they have 1 double bedroom and 2 bedrooms each with 2 single beds. They also offer basic services like living-dining room, sofa, TV, and modern equipped kitchens with a washing machine, dishwasher, oven and hob.

But besides all the good location and decoration, we found out that it has a lot of bad reviews talking about the service, the personal staff and the establishment.

Chic & Basic Velvet it is a 3 stars hotel located in Barcelona near Plaça Espanya and Sants station. It is part of the hotels' chain Chic&Basic that has 9 establishments in Barcelona and it was founded by Hugo Bertrán and Albert Montesinos 18 years ago.

His style is the glamour of the 50s with cabaret and classics with black and white airs. They have velvets, golden lamps, wooden details, theatre and cinema signs.

The hotel offers you 5 types of different rooms: Twin exterior, Superior, Matrimonial Interior, Familiar y Triple.

About other services, Chic & Basic Velvet has private parking in the same building also, they have a solarium terrace with views over all the city and with some showers. Another thing, the hotel offers you bikes to rent and visit the city and it’s a really good idea because if you want to visit Barcelona by bike is one of the most used transports in Barcelona.

The fact that we are 10-minutes away from Sants station and next to the Fira de Barcelona in Plaza España, with a direct connection to the Aerobús that reaches the city's airport in 20 minutes, gives us a very important location factor

All are equipped with Wi-Fi, flat-screen satellite TV, a safe, and a full bathroom with a hairdryer, among other facilities. What are you starting to disconnect?

IMPROVEMENT PLAN - Hostal Pension San Ramon

As shown in the previous graphs, Hostal Pension San Ramon wasn’t recommendable for various reasons based on the rating. The area that the customers were least satisfied with was the cleanliness.The positive thing about the rating is that the customers were very impressed by the location.It is better in a way because if the reason for low rating was location, it would be very difficult to improve as the solution would only be to move or get transport service for everyone.The most important area to improve are the following:

Cleanliness and services:First of all, it needs to be clear that the value of the brand comes from the service.However, due to the low quality of service personnel and the low entry threshold for front-line service personnel, it is a very serious problem, so increasing the entry requirements and appropriately raising wages can not only improve the quality of service personnel but also promote enthusiasm.so that the employees can serve with the best attitude.
Furthermore, from a deeper perspective, Hygienic problems are not up to standard is also a loophole in the hotel management system.The hotel can strengthen the sanitary supervision of essential supplies to guests through many ways, for example, it must be provided the standard cleaning items such as soap and toothbrushes in each room every day, especially insecticide because of reality condition.Also we recommend to put smart labels on the sheets to ensure regular replacement. Add new technology can make customers feel interesting and more secure about the sanitary condition.At last ,dirty supplies such as tooth cups, slippers, kettles can be concentrated in the camera-supervised space in order to clean together.


Noisy environment: If it isn’t allowed to make noise in that area, the owner should talk to the neighbours or complain to the police in an extreme case.But If it is allowed to make noise on weekends or everyday in a specific time, there isn’t a specific way to stop this. One of the ways that could stop the customer from giving a low rating in this area could be mentioning it before the customer book a room but in a positive way. For example, instead of saying that it has a noisy environment, you could say that the customers should feel free to spend the night there and the neighbours won’t have a problem with the noise till 24:00h or weekends but after that they should also respect the rule.
