Having read TotemTourism’s Sustainable Tourism Report 2013/14, now watch these videos showing two eco-friendly options:
1. World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms (WWOPF), a movement that links volunteers with organic farms and growers. Click on http://www.wwoof.net/welcome-to-wwoof/
2. Hotel Costa Vella, a boutique hotel in Santiago de Compostela. Click on the link to watch an interview to the owner, Mr. José Antonio Linares. Also available at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YQQGdi2upnw&list=UUUcJDfIcA-oO4gFR5o0tjDA.
If you wish, you can visit the hotel’s website at: http://www.costavella.com/
Then answer the following questions:
-After watching the videos, which option appeals more to you as a user? Why?
-Which one would you prefer to work for? Why?
-After reading the report, which aspect do you find most surprising / interesting / disturbing? Why?
-Do you agree that “in today’s sustainable tourism world there are massive opportunities – not just economic but social, environmental and cultural too”?
-As future professionals in the tourism industry, how could you take advantage of such “massive opportunities”?

On both videos they try to give a new view to the Word " Tourism ", becuase maybe nowadays we have the idea of visit things and make pictures, but maybe go to a farm and learn to do things like they were used to could be a way of tourism.
Well, I prefer to work at the hotel, because they have innovative ideas for the sector.
Well I like the way he talks about a single toast, the rain... he try to make everything feel different at the hotel.
Yes i think in the Today's sustainaible tourism are massive oportunities, but just because it's a fashion...
As a user i'd prefer to go to the Santiago de Compostela's hotel. I think this initiative is good for the tourism industry, good food, potentiate whats seems to be a threaten, sell Galicia into another way. Also for working I think it's the best option. With this I'm not saying that I don't like nature at all, but I prefer to be in the city, and work for an hotel than being everyday sorrounded by nature. The most interesting point for me is the way how the owner of the hotel in Santiago converts the bad aspects of Galicia into strenghts, I'm really surprised of how can he consider rain a good thing for his business, but he does.
I agree there are lot on sustainable oportunities around there. If not why all this sustainable businesses that are appearing last years are growing as fast as they are doing and why they have that exit with guests? Of course you have to take advantatge of this opportunities, take benefit of what the world is giving nowadays to you, and nowadays the sustainable projects are on the top of the tourism evolution.
I think that you don’t compare the two models, because is a different activity. All activities are involved with tourism and the sostinibility, but are a diferents points of vision.
If I choose a option to work I prefer the Hotel Costa Vella, but only because is a model in the hotel, and this is in the future the work that i prefer, because I prefer to work in a hotel.
But now that i’m a student, I choose the option of WWOPF, and the reasons are that you have the posibility to move around the world and visit new cultures. The pact is very simple, you work and they give you accommodation and food.
This two options are differents points to apply the sustainability in the tourism world, but the most important is that you don’t contribuite to worsen the enviroment.
Since forever that the sustainable tourism has not attracted me very much but after watching this video I could have know the advantages of this type of tourism.
First of all thanks of sustainable tourism you can visit and stay in other countries and in the same time you can cooperate with socials aspects and respect the environment.
Second of all, is true that sustainable tourism is much expensive than other types of tourism, because the client have pay a plus for doing anything with respect to environment.
This means that it is a business opportunity to create a hotel in the middle of the city as a Hotel Costa Vella.
I have like very much the concept of the hotel Costa Vella. It is a good way of knowing Santiago and being surrounded with a cultural environment without need to take a vehicle to be transported.
I believe in family segment, and it is a good opportunity to offer sustainable accommodation for this type of tourism: all of us we have a mum who repeats constantly that we have to take care of the environment.
I prefer to work in the Hotel Costa Vella, I would like to work in a hotel in the future and I think is a good option to work in Galicia. Santiago de Compostela is one of my favorite cities in Spain, and it would be an honor to work there. A lot of people of all the world go there to see the cathedral, the end of the “Camino de Santiago” and it is a thing that I want to do.
It’s interesting the difference between the two options, the first one is working in a farm and being as volunteer and the second one is in a big city with a lot of people of the world. It would be interesting to work for a season as a volunteer, and know how the people work in a farm and how the live.
It’s also interesting how the local people made the rain as advantage, how the hotel wants to be different than the others making little changes like making the bread in the fire and not in the toaster. In this point is surprising the importance of the Xacobeo for the local people.
And finally I have to comment all the opportunities that the tourism can offer, a clear example is Santiago de Compostela because a lot of people goes there for cultural reasons, as I said before, to see the cathedral. It also have environmental opportunities, the tourism can do a lot of things to be a sustainable and ecologic tourism.
-After watching the videos, which option appeals more to you as a user? Why?
* In my opinion the first video sounds more interesting, the main reason is because we are losing the values of the real important things, I would be happy to spend some time at a place like that, furthermore it sames very cool, however this world we are living at, makes everyday more difficult to do the things that we really want and as a result of this we do the things that we are supposed to do.
-Which one would you prefer to work for? Why?
*I would be happy to work in the first one, in order to get this knowledge that we are losing.
After reading the report, which aspect do you find most surprising / interesting / disturbing? Why?
*The most surprising aspect that I watched is that the first video is totally old ,they are doing things that a lot of people used to do on their lifes, I mean, is that as strange?, because when I was a child at my grandfather's town this lifestyle was totally normal
-As future professionals in the tourism industry, how could you take advantage of such “massive opportunities”?
*The main point is to make the people to be conscious, because even if I'm doing my best in order to be more sustainable, if people dont know that, the result it's going to be the same.
My favourite option as a user is the first one, the World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms, because since I was a child I liked nature and lifestyle in a farm. Also, the green system is more than positive for tourism and life because it doesn’t produce pollution and negative impacts on nature and society.
Both companies are different. One is dedicated to hospitality and the other to promote green and nature aspects through farms. In my case I would prefer to work in a WWOOF because I don’t like the hospitality world but I like nature, environment and echological aspects.
Maybe the aspect that I find more interesting is the future ideas and perspectives. We live in a crisis situation and it’s more dificult to make plans for 15 or 20 years. Also in the air sector, today there are a lot of competitors and it is complicated to enter in this market.
I agree with the question. Altough sustainable tourism doesn’t have more opportunities than others such as cultural, gastronomic or sportive. To expand this kind tourism, it is necessary to obtain economic and social resources to develop and improve sustainable tourism.
Yes, all opportunities ( big and small ) are good and positive to improve our level and knowledge in this area. I think that all opportunities should be taken.
